lthough it may often seem otherwise, computers are very predictable; they do exactly what they are told (i.e., programmed) to do. Randomness is the antithesis of predictability, and this makes the generation of random number by a computer problematic. There are two general methods used by computers to generate random numbers: hardware and software. A hardware generator may be a dedicated device, noise from device drivers, or some other source. The software method uses a pseudo-random number generator (PRNG), so called because a mathematical formula produces the numbers. The random numbers generated in this chapter use the second method, a PRNG, which is built into either the shell or awk. This generator uses the last number produced to calculate the next one, unless a new seed is given. If you toss a coin 92 times, you don t expect it to come up heads every time, but it would be a perfectly reasonable random sequence, and certainly unpredictable. If you roll a die six times, you don t expect each number to come up exactly once, but the more times you roll, the closer the result should be to an even distribution across all the possible values. The PRNGs in modern shells, as well as that in awk, produce very good random sequences that can be used for all but the most exacting tasks. This chapter presents functions for generating one or more random numbers across a given range, and scripts that take advantage of them.

Some shells have a $RANDOM variable that returns a different random number between 0 and 32,767 inclusive each time it is referenced. Since this variable is not required by the POSIX standard, there are shells within the scope of this book that do not include it. To write scripts that are portable, yet take advantage of the variable when it exists, I wrote the random function. If $RANDOM produces random numbers, then the function is defined to use it. Otherwise, random numbers are generated by awk. Two functions that make use of random, toss and randstr, are also included in the library.

This example shows using the standard Java technique of checking for null before accessing an object and then using the Groovy safe navigation/dereference operator to accomplish the same thing.
