From a communications standpoint, WF provides you with some basic tools to use XML Web Services. Using WF, you can expose a workflow as a Web Service, and you can consume other Web Services quite easily. Isn t this the same functionality as WCF, though Yes, WCF provides you with the basic tools you need to implement and consume XML Web Services, but WCF is a great deal more powerful than that. While the primary goal of WCF is to unify the programming model for all electronic communications processes, certainly one could argue a secondary goal of WCF is to implement the Internet standards for Web Services and allow you to build connection-based service-oriented architectures, or SOAs. With SOAs, software moves from a call this method mentality to a use this service mentality. If I change a given method s signature, whether I change the method name or the types or numbers of input parameters, I must recompile all the software that depends on (uses) that method. As you know, in large software systems, this process can be difficult and painful. Quite often the process doesn t go right and the software fails during execution, which is a nice way of saying it crashes when the users need it the most.

Under the Hood Active Directory and Domain Name System As part of installation, Setup installs Active Directory and promotes the computer to a domain controller, creating a domain. Active Directory is a requirement for several Windows Small Business Server components. The Windows Small Business Server network is TCP/IP-based, so a Domain Name System (DNS) server provides name resolution. Although Active Directory works with any DNS server that complies with the appropriate standards, stick with the DNS server provided with Windows Small Business Server it works great and is configured automatically by Windows Small Business Server. During Setup, the DNS service is configured to listen only to DNS queries from the local network. In addition, the DNS server is unbound from the external network adapter so that your internal DNS information is not available to outsiders. If you need to host your own Internet-accessible DNS server (to host the DNS records for your company Web site and e-mail server), do so on a separate server from the Windows Small Business Server computer, and place this server in a perimeter network (see 3, Designing a Network, for more information). Trying to host both an Internet DNS server and an internal DNS server on the same computer results in a security vulnerability and will probably break DNS resolution for client computers. Most small businesses are better off letting their ISP host their DNS records as well as their primary Internet Web site. Note

As with the sequential workflow application, Visual Studio is now ready for us to build a statemachine workflow. We re not quite ready to actually build a state-machine workflow at this point in the book. Why Because we need to trigger the events that cause the workflow to change state. To do that, we ll need to understand how workflow instances communicate with their host applications so that our host application can perform the trigger actions. We ll begin looking at host and workflow communication in 8, Calling External Methods, but it s in 10, Event Activities, that we learn what we need to know to drive state-machine workflows.

Whatever backup device you choose, you will need to have sufficient media for it to manage a full schedule of backups. Don t stint here. If the price for a batch of DDS4 or DLT tapes seems too good to be true, it probably is. Once you ve decided on your backup strategy, you ll have a good idea of the number of media you ll need to support it, whether tapes or disks. Keep in mind that media does fail, and there will be times you want or need to do something special, so order accordingly. If your backup strategy calls for 25 tapes used in rotation, you ll probably want 30 or 35, plus a couple of cleaning tapes. Backup strategies are covered in the next section, Designing a Backup Strategy. Before you spend your money on a batch of tapes, buy one of the brand you are considering and test it. And test it some more. Some brands of tapes do have problems with some tape drives. You want to make sure there aren t any incompatibilities before you spend your money on a bunch of tapes.
