One of my first experiences with web services was several years ago. As a beginner, I started using the several Apache libraries for working with XML and web services. These were a little unwieldy and took quite some time to learn considering the numerous acronyms, specifications, and implementations to sift through. When Sun introduced the Java EE 5 platform, it included JAX-WS, a new API combined with annotations that greatly simplified the process of working with web services. This XML-based document approach is similar to SOAP and replaces the XML-RPC type of web services that existed in the past. NetBeans 5.5 provides several convenient tools for creating web services using JAX-WS. These tools can help you quickly create web service servers and clients, as well as get rid of much of the boilerplate code you typically write. In NetBeans, you can specify several different web service file types using the New File wizard: Web Service: Creates an empty web service that is part of an EJB or web container that is called by a client application.
