All four can be displayed on any TV, but the fourth is specifically intended for widescreen TVs This may seem straightforward, but it gets much more complicated The problem is that very few movies are in 16:9 (178) format The preceding discussions dealt with 16:9 widescreen in a general case Until 16:9 cameras become more widespread, however, there will be very little video created in 16:9 Most movies are usually 185 or wider, although European movies are often 166 DVD only supports aspect ratios of 133 (4:3) and 178 (16:9) because they are the two most common television shapes Movies that are a different shape must be made to fit, which brings us back to pegs and holes In this case, the hole is DVD s 16:9 shape (which is either shown in full on a widescreen TV or formatted to letterbox or pan and scan for a regular TV) There are essentially four ways to fit a 185 or wider movie peg into a 178 hole: 1 Letterbox to 16:9 When the movie is transferred from film, black mattes are added to box it into the 16:9 shape These mattes become a permanent part of the picture The position and thickness of the mattes depend on the shape of the original a For a 185 movie, the mattes are very small On a widescreen TV or in automatic pan and scan on a regular TV (where the player is extracting a vertical slice from the letterboxed picture), the mattes are hidden in the overscan area22 On a standard TV in automatic letterbox mode (where the player is letterboxing an already letterboxed picture), the thin permanent mattes merge imperceptibly with the thick player-generated mattes b For a 235 movie, the permanent mattes are much thicker In this case, the picture has visible mattes no matter how it is displayed.

When the picture is letterboxed by the player, the permanent mattes merge with the player-generated mattes to form extrathick mattes on the television These mattes are the same size as if the movie had been letterboxed originally for 4:3 display (as with a laserdisc) c For a 166 movie, thin mattes are placed on the sides instead of at the top and bottom and generally will be hidden in the overscan area 2 Crop to 16:9 For 185 movies, slicing 2 percent from each side is sufficient and probably will not be noticeable The same applies to 166 movies, except that about 3 percent is sliced off the top and off the bottom However, to fit a 235 movie requires slicing 12 percent from each side This procrustean approach throws away a quarter of the picture and is not a likely to be a popular solution 3 Pan and scan to 16:9 The standard pan and scan technique can be used with a 16:9 window (as opposed to a 4:3 window) when transferring from film to DVD For 185 movies, the result is essentially the same as cropping and is hardly worth the extra work For wider movies, pan and scan is more useful, but the original aspect ratio is lost, which goes against the spirit of a widescreen format When going to the trouble of supporting DVD s widescreen format, it seems silly to pan and scan inside it, but if the option is there, someone is bound to use it 4 Open the soft matte to 16:9 When going from 185 to 16:9, a small amount of picture from the top and bottom of the full-frame film area can be included This stays close to the original aspect ratio without requiring a matte, and the extra picture will be hidden in the overscan area on a widescreen TV or when panned and scanned by the DVD player Even wider movies are usually shot full frame, so the soft matte area can be included in the transfer (Figure 320) Most movies are converted to anamorphic DVD using methods 1 and 4 Many directors are opposed for artistic reasons to the pan and scan process, especially if it is done mechanically by the player They may choose to make.
